8th October 2024

Dear families,

We began our celebration of Black History Month last week. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity of our school community here in East London. This month provides us with a special moment to reflect on the contributions and histories of Black people in the UK and beyond, but also to reaffirm our commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist environment for all of our students and families.

At our school, we are proud to embrace our diverse community and remain dedicated to an anti-racist strategy that goes beyond words, it is woven into the fabric of our school ethos. This year, our focus for Black History Month is allyship. Allyship means standing in solidarity with those affected by racism, using our voices to challenge injustice, and taking action to promote equality. Being an ally is not just about being kind or supportive—it’s about actively confronting racism when we see it, educating ourselves and others, and ensuring that our school is a place where every student can thrive, free from discrimination and prejudice.

An anti-racist school is one where all members of the community—students, teachers, staff, and parents, work together to create a space that is fair, just, and respectful. We encourage all of our stakeholders to reflect on what it means to be part of an anti-racist school. This involves questioning the biases we hold, addressing inequality when it appears, and ensuring that every child’s unique identity is celebrated and supported.

We cannot discuss Black History Month without acknowledging the events of this past summer. The unrest in Britain in 2024 reminded us all of the deep-rooted inequalities that still exist in our society. It was a powerful reminder that the fight against racism and injustice is ongoing. However, out of those difficult moments came a renewed determination to create lasting change. At our school, we are committed to using these lessons to continue teaching our students the importance of faith, love, and unity. These values guide us in building a community where every child feels loved, supported, and empowered to be their true self.

As we move through Black History Month and beyond, we ask for your continued partnership. Let us work together to build a school that reflects the best of us a school where allyship is not only spoken about but practiced every day. Together, we can help shape a future where equality, respect, and justice are at the heart of everything we do.

Thank you for your support in these efforts, and we look forward to engaging with you and your children during this important month of celebration, reflection, and growth.

Warm regards,
Ben Siaw
